»Hide and Seek: Electronic waste in the in vitro diagnostics (IVD) industry«

Single-use consumables used in point-of-care diagnostics (POCT) in intensive care units, operating rooms and at the scene of an accident increasingly contain electronic components. This is leading to a growing environmental impact from electronic waste.

Prof. Maïwenn Kersaudy-Kerhoas's lecture analyzes current industry practices, highlights regulatory challenges and discusses the need for sustainable solutions to reduce or eliminate electronic waste.

Speaker

Professor Maïwenn Kersaudy-Kerhoas has been Academic Director of the Global Research Institute in Health & Care Engineering at Heriot-Watt University since 2022. Prior to that, she was Professor of Microfluidic Engineering at the same institution from 2020, having been an Associate Professor from 2017 to 2020.

Prof. Kersaudy-Kerhoas has also worked as an Honorary Lecturer (2018-2021) and Honorary Fellow (2015-2018) at the University of Edinburgh in the section of Infectious Medicine. Her academic career began at Heriot-Watt University, where she worked as a lecturer/assistant professor from 2014 to 2017 and as a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow from 2013 to 2018.

Moderation

Dr. Hans Walter studied materials science at Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, where he also completed his doctorate in materials engineering. He has been working at Fraunhofer IZM since 1998, specializing in materials characterization and analysis in the field of reliability of microelectronic systems and failure analysis of assemblies. Among other things, he headed the MicroMaterialsTesting Laboratory there.

Since 2023, he has been supporting the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD) in the »Green ICT @ FMD« project, particularly in matters relating to norms, standards and guidelines for resource-saving ICT.
